What is atopic dermatitis?
Felix. Atopic dermatitis on a small child.
Correctly, we actually refer to this non-contagious skin disease atopic dermatitis. We often speak of eczema, neurodermitis or endogenous eczema. The term originates from the 19th century, because at that time the cause of this skin disease was thought to come from an inflammation of the nerves, which however was refuted - but still is familiar.
Atopic dermatitis (still) cannot be cured, but there are various treatments. All current treatments rely on increasing the skin's moisture content and to relieve inflammation.
Neurodermits is a widespread disease especially in our Western world. According to different surveys 5-20% of children and 1-3% of adults suffer from atopic eczema. The disease is usually brought on in spurts of varying lengths and intensity and without a discernible trigger. Also, it ends just as often without a really recognizable reason. This makes treatment more difficult, because this simply creates a high uncertainty. Did exactly this therapy help?
One can assume that several factors play a role: nutrition, hygiene, psychological factors such as stress - in general: the overall living conditions. That fact makes a successful therapy of course not easier. Unfortunately, the exact reason for the outbreak of the disease is not known.
In any case, eczema or atopic dermatitis is a huge burden for the person involved. Especially the strong itching poses a special problem. Especially the little ones need special affection at the time of the outbreak. AquaMedica products are based on the standard form of treatment - on one hand to get a handle on the dry skin and on the other hand, to treat the inflammation.
